‘Reel Youth’ Community Stories Project Workshop to be Held at CAT Kelowna

Okanagan winners of the 2019 ‘Reel Youth’ Community Stories Project will be gathering in Kelowna on Feb 22-23 for a weekend long workshop that will be held on campus of the College for Arts and Technology (CAT), Kelowna. 

The workshops, running from 9am-5pm each day, will bring Okanagan film making teams together to build community, skills, and prepare them for producing a short film using the funding they have been awarded. There were 50 youth team submissions to the competition and ten groups have been chosen, each receiving $10,000 in funding to create their film.

The College for Arts and Technology is a world class education facility, playing an important role in developing the next generation of film makers.

CAT’s campus will host three Storyhive staff, and seven winning Storyhive teams – including Fifth Productions, a team made up of Jared White, Morgan Thomas , Nash Madrigga, Georgia Spalding and Anibal (Mo) Blandon Chavarria), all current students from CAT’s Digital Filmmaking program. There will be a further workshop in Kamloops the following weekend. Finished projects will be featured on select Telus platforms later in 2020.

We have cross over in our organizational missions and, with one of the winning teams being made up of students at CAT, it made sense for us to explore the CAT Campus as a venue,” says Mark Vonesh, Director of Reel Youth.

Reel Youth helped 450 young people across Canada make 165 films in 2019.
