At College for Arts and Technology, we have an innovative way to connect students to learning opportunities through our Distributed Learning College. Each campus has these DLC’s that allow the students resources across all three campuses, which helps maximize student learning. Students can learn from faculty at all three campuses, meaning that for instance, a student in Fredericton can learn from a seasoned industry professional from our Kelowna or Halifax campuses.

The Distributed Learning College is a great resource and is used in a number of ways, one of which is in the form of the College’s new cross-campus project, the e-Celebrity Master Class.

“The e-Celebrity Master Class is our new initiative to identify College celebrities that are recognized as industry experts both internally and externally,” says Christine Johnston, Campus Director & Student Services Manager in Fredericton. “The e-Celebrity has exceptional experience and/or an outstanding reputation and promotes the College’s values. They are excellent teachers and communicators who often mentor and coach students to reach success both personally and professionally.”

“Anatomy of a Photoshoot” – Digital Photography College Master Class

Kevin Trowbridge, who is the Kelowna campus Department Head for Digital Photography, was chosen to be the College’s first e-Celebrity, to provide an interactive seminar to Digital Photography Training students in Kelowna, Halifax, and Fredericton. Kevin’s photography career is very much focused on an editorial style of wedding photography, so he decided he wanted students to experience the dynamics and anatomy of a professional photoshoot from the beginning to the end.

A team of College for Arts & Technology students and staff came along to film the process from the start to the finish. The couple chosen for the shoot was a couple that Kevin himself did not know and were recommended to him. Kevin wanted the experience of the shoot to be authentic, like any other professional shoot where the photographer is working with a new model or client.

When Kevin and his wife, Katherine, a professional photographer as well, saw Vincent and Valaura’s picture for the first time, ideas started flowing for a vintage-themed shoot. They decided to do a James Dean/Marilyn Monroe inspired theme. The team also had access to a 1950 Vincent motorcycle for the shoot, which added greatly to the overall theme and look of the shoot.

The photoshoot produced beautiful work and invaluable insight for the Digital Photography program students at all three of our campuses. The shoot happened over the summer, where Kevin had his photography students come for hands on experience in a real shoot, and while giving his own students hands on experience he also created a live video cast workshop for all students on all three campuses. This video was delivered through Digital Learning College’s at each campus.

A special thanks to Giselle Gaspa and Brandie Jollimore from Mirror Mirror Day Spa & Salon for the hair and makeup, as well as Frock Clothing for some of the vintage accessories and of course the couple, Vincent and Valaura.
