A woman holding a yellow flower with the words tegen gaye.

CAT Audio Engineering & Production Alumni Teigan Gayse has been busy recording her first album.

CAT’s social media has been abuzz this term with media links relating to CAT alumni Teigen Gayse’s first album. Since graduating in 2014, Teigan has released two singles, two videos and now the new self-titled album. interFACE caught up with her to talk music and memories of CAT.

How would you describe your musical style?

Currently my music is country/pop, country/folk, but I’d like to venture out a bit more on the next album and try something new. I love so many genres and each song I write I have a different recording style in mind.

Tell us about your new album?

My self-titled debut album was recorded in Dripping Springs, Texas at The Zone Recording Studio. I wrote all the songs on the album myself and the genre varies with each song.

    Where can we find it?

You can find my album on all music platforms. And I’m currently selling CD’s as well. If you’d like a signed CD you can get a hold of me personally on my socials.

What do you find most enjoyable about the music industry, and or the recording process?

I love the creating process. Writing music is my absolute favorite thing to do and when I get onto something good it’s so liberating, I feel like I’m doing exactly what I was meant to do in life.

What is the most challenging aspect of the above?

Finding creative ways to get yourself out there is always challenging, especially right now during Covid-19. That being said, I do enjoy a little challenge.

How did your time at CAT help you in the process of recording the album, and/or in navigating the music business?

Understanding what’s going on in the studio made a huge difference for me when it came to the recording process. Before I went to CAT I didn’t know a thing in the studio and now when I’m in there I can understand the producer and he can understand me and it’s so nice.

Doesn’t matter which side of the board you are on, you get so much respect in the world when you know what you are doing and talking about.

    Teigan Gayse

How has your career progressed since graduation? What has your journey looked like?

I started recording and releasing singles to music platforms and Canadian Country Radio, learning the business, and building my brand. Since CAT I’ve released 2 singles, 2 music videos and an album.

What has been your biggest break so far?

“Your Girlfriend’s Crazy” was such a good foot in the door for me but I think my song “Don’t Look Back” has got the most attention with the media and according to analytics. I have a good team behind me right now and that makes such a difference.

What top tips do you have for CAT audio students, especially those who want to pursue a recording career like yourself?

Doesn’t matter which side of the board you are on, you get so much respect in the world when you know what you are doing and talking about. My best advice when you are done school is don’t stop. There is no better learning than being thrown to the wolves, and you will have the upper hand because you have schooling.

Do you have any favorite memories of your time at CAT?

Oh gosh, so many good memories, some of the BEST memories I’ve had in my time living in Kelowna. Late night studio sessions. ‘Music at Lunch’ was always a fun time. Playing music with Nathan Peacock under the big Christmas tree in the parking lot. Smashing food and breaking glass in Meredith Shuurman’s ‘Music for Film and Television’ class. ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) with the boys (we did Zombieland). Countless memories.
